Sidewalks that spill the tea

Only in Doylestown does a rainy day come with a reading assignment. Pearl S. Buck International and the Doylestown Library have teamed up for ‘Rain Poetry’ coming this fall. Invisible poems sprayed onto sidewalks using an eco-friendly treatment that stays undercover until it pours. Think of it as Bucks’s version of hidden treasure (if the treasure were feelings). Residents are now exactly one rainstorm away from accidentally becoming poetry enthusiasts. Umbrellas optional. Existential reflection highly encouraged.

Stay calm, everyone

In news almost too wholesome, our primary elections delivered high turnout and zero drama. Democrats turned out in force, Republican incumbents cruised and poll workers reported smooth, conflict free operations across the board. Just neighbors doing democracy the old fashioned way, standing in line politely and pretending not to recognize each other. As we head toward the midterms, the vibe is civil and engaged. Which frankly deserves its own “I Voted” sticker.

I’m heading to the real world Etsy

Historic Mill Street got a nice boost with the launch of Shops on Mill. A newer community collective hosting up to 100 hyper local creators, vendors, designers and artists under one roof. It’s essentially what happens when a farmer’s market and a Pinterest board have a productive child. Great spot for one of a kind home goods, local art and at least three things you absolutely did not need five seconds ago. Bristol Borough officials are reportedly bracing for a dramatic spike in canvas tote bag ownership.

Personally, I’ll be spending the week pretending I definitely understand poetry and convincing myself I absolutely need another handcrafted candle.

I’ve never actually sat down for a formal interview before. Mostly because the thought of wielding a voice recorder makes me feel like a rookie detective in a true crime podcast.

But we (me, Cait and my faithful COO, Lisa) were cordially invited to chat with a Chef and eat food featured on America's Best Restaurants. And who am I to say no to that? So, let’s get into it.

If you’ve stopped by Bailey’s Bar & Grille for dinner anytime in the last couple of years, you’ve probably noticed something. The food started stealing the spotlight. What used to be a Levittown pub (they opened in 1991) that served decent bites has evolved into a serious dining destination…that just also happens to pour a great drink.

And behind that transformation? Chef Josh Pham. He arrived in 2022 and nothing has been the same since.

We sat down with the Philadelphia native turned Bucks County culinary ringleader to talk about his unlikely path from “kid forced to work in dad’s restaurant” to the guy keeping local foodies refreshing the kitchen lineup every single week.

From baseball dreams to behind the line

Chef Josh never planned on cooking for a living. Actually, he spent years actively trying not to.

“I never wanted to be a chef,” Josh says, laughing. “My dad owned a restaurant when I was a kid, so I worked in kitchens my whole life. I hated it. I wanted to be a baseball player.”

He played through high school, but when the pro sports dream started fading, the kitchen kept calling him back like a clingy ex.

“When I needed work, I just got better at it,” he says. “By 18 or 19, I realized… okay, maybe I actually love this.”

Turns out, he was pretty good at it too.

Josh sharpened his skills in high-volume kitchens across the region, spending years along the waterfront before helping run and launch spots in Center City and Newtown. Now, he’s brought that big-city expertise straight to Bucks County (minus the valet parking and overpriced apps).

Center City flavor without the big city bill

One of Josh’s biggest goals is simple: serve elevated food that doesn’t require a government sized budget.

“We want a family of six to walk in and everyone finds something they love,” Josh explains. “But at the same time, we’re serving entrées here that easily could’ve been sold for a massive premium downtown. The difference is you’re not paying for the zip code.”

Case in point, his beloved Chicken and Gnocchi. It’s a rich, comfort food masterpiece loaded with truffle oil, chicken gravy and bacon fat. Basically, a warm hug that makes you forget your cholesterol levels exist.

“It started as a dish my wife and I had downtown,” Josh says. “I spent a while reverse-engineering it until I finally nailed it.”

Now it’s more than a crowd favorite, it’s become their personal anniversary dinner tradition. Which honestly feels way more romantic than a bouquet of flowers that’ll die in four days anyway.

The kitchen is basically a delicious science experiment

“All the weekly features are basically us asking, ‘Does this have legs?’” he says. “If people love it, it stays.”

And people definitely love it. The kitchen regularly sells out of these creations. Including dishes Josh casually describes as “simple” but somehow still leave patrons fighting over the last order.

Social media trends help inspire ideas, but Josh refuses to be another copy-and-paste chef chasing whatever’s going viral on TikTok that week.

“Everybody’s doing whipped ricotta right now,” he says. “Before that it was hummus. I like whipped ricotta…but it’s everywhere.”

Instead, he looks for ways to elevate comfort food with creative twists. Like stuffing savory dips into fresh bread bowls or bringing in flavors people don’t expect to find at their neighborhood spot.

“We want people coming back because the food actually tastes amazing,” he says. “Not because it’s a gimmick.”

Revolutionary concept, honestly.

The night Bailey’s became a family spot

For Josh, the restaurant’s evolution really clicked during a Valentine’s Day event that could’ve easily gone sideways.

“We did a father-daughter dinner, and honestly, I wasn’t sure if kids would even want to come here,” he says.

Instead, the place filled up.

“We made heart-shaped raviolis, and it was the cutest thing, dads and daughters everywhere. That’s when we realized: okay… we’re a family restaurant now.”

Since then, Bailey’s has become a true community hub, hosting everything from Mother’s Day sing-along brunches to charity events, golf outings, and local fundraisers. On any given weekend, there’s a good chance something’s happening and/or someone’s grandmother is actively tearing up the dance floor.

Chef Josh’s advice for home cooks

Before we let him get back to the line, we asked Josh for one piece of advice for aspiring home chefs trying to level up dinner.

His answer? Keep it simple. Stay organized. And never underestimate dairy.

“Plenty of people can cook one great meal,” Josh says. “The difference between a cook and a chef is making that same meal a hundred times and having it come out exactly the same every single time. It’s consistency.”

And his secret weapons?

“Cream, butter and bacon,” he says immediately. “Those are my favorite three. Put them in pasta, chicken, whatever… it’s gonna taste good.”

Hard to argue with the man.

Oh and fun fact, Bailey’s will be opening a huge (100 seats) outdoor patio next spring. Everything’s looking aces.

Yesterday I was outside sweating like I owed the sun money. This morning I considered turning the heat back on. PA weather continues its proud tradition of behaving like a Craigslist roommate.

Anyway, the 3 day weekend is upon us. And while it may not be ideal ‘sit beside a pool ignoring all emails except this one’ weather, there’s still some good stuff going on.

For example, I’m skipping the usual Friday night couch marathon. Because TreeTrails is doing one of those nighttime zipline setups with lights, music and aerial obstacles. Which honestly sounds like someone turned a panic attack into a team building exercise. But in a fun way.

Wine lovers unite, Bishop Estate Vineyard has acoustic music on Saturday. Oh and the Meat Wagon truck (still an absolutely unhinged name but the barbecue is scrumptious). Never thought I’d be typing meat wagon in a sentence. And to think my middle school English teacher didn’t think I’d ever be a real writer.

Completely unnecessary side note. I realized this week that I’ve officially reached the age where I make comments about the weather to strangers. Not even meaningful observations either. Just things like “bit breezy today huh?” to a guy buying mulch at Lowe’s. Like I’m running for local office smh. Please send help.

Anyway, if you want something quieter, the Thompson-Neely House hosts a really thoughtful ceremony Sunday honoring Continental Army soldiers buried nearby. It’s one of those local history things that deserves way more attention than it gets.

Then Monday morning, Doylestown does its parade for the 158th year in a row. Which means this tradition has survived world wars, disco and several economic collapses. Impressive longevity. It’s the Cher of MDW parades.

History buffs, history casuals and everyone in between, your GPS just got an upgrade. Bucks County’s new interactive Revolutionary War Trail map is live. It charts a dozen+ stops across Heritage, Abolitionist and Lenape trails. Not 1776 getting a little 2026 upgrade, amiright?

And on the, ‘let’s prepare for an onslaught of tourists’ front…we could all say “we told you so” to everyone else, but we’ll let Travel + Leisure say it for us. They just ranked Bucks among the east coast’s most underrated weekend escapes. From the river towns to the caffeine scene, our businesses are about to have a very busy summer.

Grab your sneakers

If you’ve noticed a sudden surge of people running like they left the stove on, it’s just the Bucks 5K Series heating up. Fresh off the Bucks County Strong 5K and the point standings are already ridiculously tight.

Running clubs and track athletes are currently taking over Central Bucks West’s stadium. June will look less like a casual jog and more like a sprint for who gets bragging rights.

Fresh coat of paint

Federal dollars are hitting the pavement. The Department of Housing & Community Development just finalized its 2026 Action Plan, greenlighting federal CDBG and HOME funds.

Translation? Prepare your favorite detour routes. And expect a wave of affordable housing face-lifts, sidewalk and pedestrian upgrades. We’ll also get public facility facelifts aimed at reviving the county’s older neighborhoods.

Where I’m heading this week

Rain, snow or triple digit temps can’t mess with your handicap anymore. The (sort of new) Golf Place in Newtown has top notch indoor simulators. Serious golfer hunting for swing data? They’ve got you. Casual player just trying to whack a ball with a beer in hand? Also got you.

I’ll be in the air condition practicing my swing. Probably grab a blue razz ICEE while I’m at it (is there a better way to cool down…?). What I won’t be doing? Laps around CB West.

The sun is out, the grass is green and we’ve all agreed to stop wearing coats even though it’s still 52 degrees in the shade. I don’t pretend to have all the answers, but I know you should layer in spring.

Of course, as I’m saying this summer is kicking the front door in. We’ll be in the 90s for a couple of days. And unlike the decade, the temperature doesn’t feel as good.

Okay, this flatbread…

Over at Itri, the spring garden flatbread is a farmer’s market in your mouth. Loaded with fresh ramps (similar to a leek, but better), asparagus and creamy ricotta. It’s delicious enough you won’t even care you’re aggressively picking a ramp out of your teeth in public. You do you, baby. I’ll mind my business.

Meanwhile, the lavender latte has migrated back to Pretty Bird Coffee. It somehow captures the feeling of strolling through town in May and convincing yourself this is the year you’ll finally keep a hanging flower basket alive. It’s floral, smooth and just fancy enough. Not me holding the cup with both hands and staring thoughtfully out the window like I’m in a movie.

You’ve seen the official county seal slapped on a courthouse wall or a township truck parked crookedly outside a Wawa. But that emblem wasn’t a marketing gimmick. It was hand drawn by William Penn in 1683.

Apparently, Penn’s first impression of the New World was that it was one giant charcuterie board. He was obsessed with the local woods which he claimed produced “plums, grapes, peaches, strawberries, and chestnuts in abundance”. So he put a tree and a vine right on the seal and the rest is history…

Sounds like early PA was basically a Wegmans produce aisle, just with more mud and fewer cheese samples.

Newtown’s newest villain (not really)

Steven Singer Jewelers is bringing the best reverse psychology marketing ever to Newtown (“I Hate Steven Singer”). For years, we’ve driven past those ads wondering, “Who IS this guy and why does everyone hate him?” Turns out, they don’t. Quite the opposite, actually.

He’s one of the best in the game. So I’m gonna head over and browse some diamonds while pretending to understand what “clarity” means. Squint harder, you’ll look like an expert too.

Enjoy your Sunday, stay cool and hope the humidity doesn’t turn you into a blowball. Not to brag, but I’ll be going from staring out the window with my coffee to squinting at diamonds I can’t afford.

History, food, music, beer against a backdrop that makes you stop mid-sip. Not a bad place to call home.

If you leave your house

If you prefer your history with a side of gunpowder, head to Tinicum Park to cheer on the USA’s 250th. They’re swapping textbooks for cannon blasts and Durham Boat replicas on hand. Which is great for anyone who wants to experience the Revolutionary War without the whole 'rowing for your life in a freezing river' part. Runs Saturday 10-5.

Main Street is trading traffic jams for dining tables May 15–16. From 5 to 11 (yes, at night), Doylestown’s best foods spots are spilling onto the street for open air dining, cocktails and live music. It’s the one time of year where the tables have a better parking spot than you or I ever will.

Give your Spotify a rest at Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company. Spend Sunday (12-5) afternoon flipping through thousands of vintage records with a cold pint in hand. It’s old school therapy. Just try not to spill any IPA on the Hendrix.

Where I’m eating

Right on the water, Stella of New Hope serves brunch all weekend from 11 to 2. With views of the river that make IG filters look like a cry for help, you can chomp on locally sourced dishes (cough Southern Comfort cough). And unlike the ducks, I won’t judge your third mimosa. It’s farm to table flare + “I’m on a boat” vibes without the motion sickness.

One local tip

When New Hope becomes a mosh pit of tourists, do what the locals do. Walk, don’t drive, across the bridge into Lambertville. It’s New Hope’s chill, artsy sibling with fewer crowds. Since finding a parking spot is a miracle, guard yours with your life. Treat the bridge as your personal pedestrian highway between two states.

School’s (not) out

Afton Elementary (part of Pennsbury) just landed a big grant to expand its disability inclusive curriculum. They’re already rolling out a student run school store and mural projects celebrating diverse voices. Turns out the kids are learning empathy and entrepreneurship before most adults figure out either. No comment on my own progress.

Meanwhile, Josh Shapiro’s office just dropped funds into Bucks for environmental education. The standout project? Heritage Conservancy scored a big boost to team up with Bristol Township schools and Silver Lake Nature Center. They’re creating inclusive outdoor classrooms. Think school gardens, stream side science labs and kids learning climate resilience while simultaneously discovering worms are either fascinating or gross.

The Bucks County Senior Games are back for year 43, running June 1–6. And apparently everyone’s been training in secret. I picture someone’s uncle with the Rocky style montage on their phone.

The sign-up list was longer than ever. Especially for pickleball, cornhole and track events. Somewhere in your neighborhood, a 67-year-old is hydrating aggressively and talking serious smack before a cornhole match. The competitive spirit here doesn’t retire. It just buys orthopedic sneakers and gets terrifyingly accurate at aiming.

Less pavement, more grass

There’s a growing push to get Environmental Advisory Councils more involved in municipal planning. Government code for: maybe let’s not pave absolutely everything.

The focus is on large-scale industrial projects (mostly data centers) with tighter rules around noise, water tables, and buffer zones. Officials are essentially trying to preserve the ‘trees still seem important’ aesthetic before every open field becomes a warehouse named after a cloud.

So if you’ve ever side-eyed an empty field behind your neighborhood and thought “that feels temporary”, leaders hear you. The cows win this round.

Not me practicing cornhole until it gets dark out to see if I could still beat my dad. Also, worms aren’t gross. That was rude of me. They’re literally out there composting and minding their business.

If Yardley Inn’s new menu is any indication, summer is on our doorstep. Their sea scallops with sweet corn are like a June sunset on a plate. Also, the deviled eggs with trout roe are non-negotiable. Grab a seat by the river, order a drink and pretend your to do list doesn't exist.

Super nice to see this

Kindness Between Friends is essentially the check engine light for Bucks. But unlike the rest of us who ignore this warning for months, founder Tara Stoop actually gets right under the hood.

Whether it’s their Meals on a Budget workshops or navigating the red tape of eviction prevention and veteran support, they don’t just hand out band-aids. They provide the roadmap back to solid ground.

From utility bills to transportation, if a neighbor is slipping through the cracks, Tara’s team is usually the one holding the safety net. Thank you, Tara and team!

Did you know

Think your kids are good at hiding things? Before it was the land of 611 traffic, Bucks was the epicenter of espionage. During the Revolutionary War, women smuggled messages and supplies past British patrols by hiding notes in sewing baskets and bread loaves. Ah yes, back when bread was loaded with freedom instead of high fructose corn syrup.

Apparently no one questioned women walking around town. So they were able to sneak important updates and items to our American troops to help win the war. Just mom and her friends outsmarting an entire empire before dinner.

The Best of Bucks results are trickling in. And Bristol and Doylestown understood the assignment. The local scene isn’t just hanging in there, it’s thriving like sourdough in a warm kitchen. From waterfront hangs at King George Inn to the sacred caffeine rituals at Native Cafe, our small businesses are out here politely bodying the big chains. The Jetsons era is loading at Pennsbury High School. They’re breaking ground in the next two weeks on a (eyewateringly expensive) new school project. It’s the biggest local investment in a generation and will include STEM labs, learning stairs and a few thousand kids who’d still rather be in bed. But seriously, it’s about time the campus matched the talent coming out of it. Though we’ll have to wait until 2029 for the full reveal.

Wait, we have a baseball team?

Yes, Bucks County Community College has a baseball team. And yes, they’re good. The Centurions took Williamson apart 8–4 last week like it was a group project they actually cared about. Pitcher Patrick Jung casually tossed a seven-inning, seven-strikeout gem. And Bob Brant and Austin Frank were cranking doubles like it was an open bar. Keep the chaos coming, fellas.

What’s actually happening

Newtown is the new “it” girl and State Street is feeling the love. The buzz is all about Liberty Centre. It’s less “ugh, construction” and more “wait, this is actually cute”. We’re talking a town square, pedestrian bridge and (bless the parking gods) 55 new public spots. It’s all about keeping the borough charm while acknowledging it’s now everyone’s favorite Tuesday night hangout.

Get ready, athletes (and mathletes!). New pickleball and bocce courts are coming to Doylestown as part of a plan to make parks feel less like toddler territory and more like a suburban Wimbledon (with better parking). Whether you’re 14 or 84, it’s time to stretch, hydrate and prepare to take things way too seriously.

Worth the calories this week

Maize up in Perkasie is currently serving a bison short rib that feels less like dinner and more like emotional support with a fork. Slow-braised and heavy in the best way. But if you’d prefer to make a more responsible decision, the apple sunflower cake is spring on a plate. Just healthy sounding enough to mention to your trainer without making eye contact.

If you’re heading (more) north, Upper Eddy’s Black Bass Hotel has Challah French toast that continues its undefeated reign as breakfast royalty. Crisp edges + custardy interior. Ideally consumed while staring out at the river and considering a life where Mondays and emails don’t exist.

Went down the rabbit hole

Imagine the White House…but with a Wawa next door.

In the late 1780s, Robert Morris pushed hard to make the Falls of the Delaware (modern day Morrisville) the nation’s capital. He even hosted George Washington at his Summerseat estate to sweeten the pitch.

This wasn’t just big talk. In 1783, Congress actually voted to put the capital here.

So why aren’t we all commuting through “District of Morrisville”? Blame Alexander Hamilton. He pulled off the political equivalent of a high-stakes dinner trade in the Compromise of 1790, swapping the capital’s location southward in exchange for a federal debt deal.

Today, Summerseat still stands. A reminder that instead of being stuck behind a landscaping truck, you could’ve been honking at a Senator (much more satisfying).

Where I’m going next

Cellar Pub (which has a nicer ring than Basement Bar) in New Hope opened under new ownership this weekend. This was refreshing to see

Earlier this year, Amazon decided to deliver something a bit more useful than my 3rd pair of pillow slides: a hundred thousand dollar community fund for Bucks.

Usually a “corporation gives money” headline has the same energy as a corporate training video on "synergy” (what do you mean?). But this one is actually cool. They’re handing out micro-grants directly to local doers.

Think, the neighbor who starts a free little pantry, the teacher who quietly funds a STEM club or the person who somehow gets 12 people to show up and clean a park on a Saturday morning.

It’s less corporate PR, more “here, go make your neighborhood better”. And I can get behind that.

I’ll be over here in my pillow slides (like walking on a cloud), sipping a mocktail and wondering if a Morrisville DC would have meant a Metro stop in Levittown. Our current traffic jams tell me we dodged a bullet.

You can celebrate opening day at Historic Fallsington Saturday. They’ve given our local heritage a bit of a facelift and they’re ready for you to come be nosy. You can explore the newly updated Visitors Center, meet the site’s new Executive Director and step inside the village's iconic buildings. A good reminder that centuries of history beat whatever’s on your Netflix queue.

Looking for a city brunch vibe without the parking ticket risk? The Cage is a solid move. With its Contemporary American aesthetic, it’s the spot to feel sophisticated while still being home in time for a nap. Psst…sip a lavender mimosa while your shakshuka is cooking. That’s the kind of advice you keep me around for.

While everyone else is playing bumper-strollers at Core Creek or Tyler, Playwicki Farm is living its best (quiet) life. It’s the low-maintenance sibling of all the Bucks parks. Get your sunset views without the Tour de Bucks cyclists or runaway toddlers.

💎 Worth the detour

If you’re tired of walking on flat pavement and pretending it’s an adventure, the fix is the High Rocks section of Ralph Stover State Park. We’re talking a 200 foot sheer rock face overlooking Tohickon Creek (use the Tory Road lot). It’s giving Swiss Alps energy (if you squint hard enough) without the 10 hour flight. Just don't look down.

This weekend I’ll be the trying to eat Mexican street corn while holding a lightsaber balancing on the edge of a cliff (eyes closed). If I’m not there, assume I chose a nap. Don’t judge me.

Forget dusty ledgers and "don’t touch" signs. Doylestown Historical Society’s new project is built to lure Gen Z away from their screens and into the past via interactive exhibits. It’s less ‘stuffy museum’ and more ‘community living room’ (with AR and concerts). This makes our history accessible rather than just archived. “I'm not like a regular historical society, I'm a cool historical society.” Their new slogan, probably.

The Greatest Third Baseman of All Time (aside from my niece, of course) traded home run stories for a PSA on sun safety at Turk Park. Phillies icon Mike Schmidt beat stage 3 skin cancer about 10 years ago and shared tips with the kids. Turns out the best way to handle a heater isn’t just a quick swing, it’s a heavy dose of SPF.

⚾ Local sports

If it feels like there’s a sudden shortage of aluminum bats and orange slices, there’s a reason. Levittown United officially threw out the first pitch for their spring season. And they blew past their previous record number of registrants. So after a few years of “maybe next season”, the community ended their slump and it feels like every kid is back on the diamond.

🤝 Community

Field of dreams coming soon(ish). Lower Bucks is officially getting its own regional crown jewel. A multi-million dollar grant was greenlit for a brand new version of Core Creek Park that’ll basically turn it into a Swiss Army knife of recreation. Multi-use sports fields, inclusive playgrounds where everyone can play and enough walking paths to finally hit those step goals.

Goodbye, red light limbo. If you spend your mornings staring at the same tail lights, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. And it’s finally turning green. The Green Light-Go program is being fast tracked to sync up traffic signals at our most notorious intersections (shaking my fist at you, Comly and Highland). Starting as early as this week, expect shorter commutes and less tapping the brakes every 10 seconds. Your morning coffee might actually stay hot for the whole drive.

A county classic, Pineville Tavern is leaning into spring harder than me at a garden center. The “I’m getting hangrier by the moment” move is the honey glazed salmon. The harissa honey glaze has just the right amount of zip (enough to wake up your taste buds without requiring a glass of milk on hand). The “I’m wearing white linen” play is Matteo’s salad. It’s loaded with artisan greens and whatever fresh veggies are currently hitting their stride.

If authentic, old-school Italian comfort is more your thing, we got you. The wait for Cugini’s has been longer than the line at the DMV, but the outcome involves a lot more garlic and a lot less paperwork. They’re the talk of Solebury right now. Go straight for the signature Cugini pasta or the wood-fire finished lasagna. Just don’t be surprised if you start talking with your hands halfway through your meal.

🤔 Did you know?

If you’ve ever trekked through Ringing Rocks Park, you know the drill. You bring a hammer, you hit a boulder and you feel slightly less crazy when it actually dings back at you.

But the history of that boulder field is weirder than a rock thinking it’s a xylophone. Back in the late 1800s, this wasn’t just a hiking spot. It was the county’s first concert venue.

A local legend named Dr. J.J. Ott decided that standard instruments were far too blah. So he curated a ‘rock organ’ by gathering specific stones that rang in different pitches. He then proceeded to play full concerts for bewildered crowds.

Imagine a Victorian-era outdoor symphony where the percussionist is just a guy with a hammer and a dream? The crowd might’ve been confused, but notice they didn’t go home early. Because before Coachella and Red Rocks, Bucks County had...Actual Rocks.

📍 Where I’m heading

If you think MeWow Cat Cafe is simply a place to get caffeinated while a tabby judges your life choices, well it is. But just consider that the opening act. Because it’s also a Doylestown community hub that just hosted World Book Night. Nothing pairs better with a novel than a feline that will inevitably sit on the very page you’re trying to read. It’s the only spot in town where you can argue about the classics and find a forever friend in the same afternoon. Feel free to name your new pal The Great Gats-paws, he’d like that.

Popped into Smoothie & Co. in Morrisville for a quick lunch and can confirm: the vibes are immaculate. The Galatica smoothie is out of this world (the joke told itself). And as someone who’s locked into a long-term contract with carbs, the whipped ricotta toast is non-negotiable. You can even give your Stanley a break and treat yourself to a little infused water while you’re waiting. Go for the nutrients, stay for the aesthetic.

❤️ Bucks heart

Bucks County Neighbors hit their 245 member cap for the year (making it officially harder to get into than a Doylestown parking spot on a Saturday night). But the real story isn’t the waitlist, it’s their “Sunshine”.

We’re talking about a card writing operation for neighbors having a rough week and interest groups designed to make sure no one feels like they’re on an island. This group is a 10/10 in looking out for one another.

They’re also the ultimate social matchmaker, minus the awkward first date small talk (plus a lot more gardening tips). It’s basically the inner circle for anyone who wants to know the people living behind the picket fences.

If you’re willing to join me in the Friday afternoon office rebellion, the Big Chill performance (1pm) is the ultimate kickoff (especially if the kids play hooky). Did I mention there’s calf cuddling? Take all my dough.

🏝️ Aloha, Croydon. It’s time to dust off that ‘way too loud’ Hawaiian shirt (every dad has been preparing for this) and ditch the suburbs for island life (beats the heck out of a layover at PHL). Neshaminy Creek is going full tropics for their annual luau Saturday 12-7. The new tiki inspired IPA is definitely worth the pour.

🍞 Brunch first, stroll later. Swing by The Forager in Bristol Borough and grab the strawberry ricotta toast (or any of their toasts honestly). Pair it with their homemade lemonade and you’ve officially won the morning. Trust and believe, it doesn’t disappoint.

🚶 Then, stick around for the first Bristol Borough Sunday Stroll of the season. Over a hundred local makers and food options are taking over Mill Street 12-4. It’s the perfect riverfront ‘support local and get your steps in’ party. Lukewarm take: Bristol Sunday Stroll > Peddler’s Village this time of year. Same vibes, half the chaos.

🚐 The Doylestown Dart (runs Mon-Fri) isn’t just for commuters. It’s your ‘very important person’ shuttle to A-Day (on Friday). Instead of circling the block for thirty minutes while your blood pressure rises, stash your car in a further out lot and let the Dart drop you at the main hubs. Save your cash for food. And cuddling cows.

🚂 And if you’re heading into town on Saturday or Sunday, park at the Doylestown train station. Then take the SEPTA line one stop to DelVal, where you’re dropped off right at the entrance to the festivities. Just check the schedule first, the train only runs every two hours.

Hidden gem

🌳 Sneak (legally) behind the Restricted Access signs. This Saturday, Bucks Beautiful is hosting a tree planting at Peace Valley Park that grants you access to restoration areas most people never see. Skip the standard loop and explore the quiet shoreline while leaving a literal green mark on the county. Feel free to name your tree Cait (or don’t, I won’t know).

This weekend I’ll be cuddling a baby cow, buying some local goodies and planting a tree. Saying it out loud, Bucks really is a magical place to live.

From patio season to paving season. If your commute feels a bit bumpier it’s because PennDOT has officially kicked off major paving work in the Levittown area. It’s a “short term pain/long term gain” situation, but maybe leave 5 minutes early for work. And roll up your windows on rough road (you only need to eat the kicked up dust once to learn that lesson).

Turning taxes into talent. A fresh $1.5 million grant is hitting Bucks County, and the kids are the big winners. This funding is going directly to programs like Bristol’s Junior Fire Cadets and summer sessions at Bucks County Technical High School. From after school spots to career starting academies, our reps just made sure the next generation has the tools to lead. This is probably the first time ever I’m not mad about paying taxes.

Little leader, large impact. The fight against Cystic Fibrosis hits home in Bucks County on May 2. This year’s Great Strides Walk at Peace Valley Park features local Ambassador Jack Deveney. At just 5 years old, Jack is the face of a movement dedicated to turning “CF” into “Cure Found.” We know he’ll have a huge turn out. Bucks takes care of Bucks. Way to go, Jack!

If you’re tired of watching the Phils lose (the sweep fellas, really?) and looking for a fun evening, grab a lawn chair and catch a home game. There’s nothing better than small town high school ball in the spring.

And the Pennridge Girls LAX team had a dominant shutout win against CB South (15-0) last week. So keep an eye on their schedule to see how that momentum carries.

🤝 Community

The goodest boy retires. After 10 years of service, Bristol Township’s K-9 Axel officially hung up the badge this weekend (meanwhile, the rest of us still have to clock in tomorrow 🥲). And to make sure the police dog program stays strong, the local VFW donated five thousand dollars. If you see Axel around town, he’s officially off the clock (which means it's finally petting time!).

In a move that’s sparking nostalgic dinner table talk, the Pennridge School District is prepping to implement Act 2. This means cursive instruction is officially returning to the classroom. Whether you think it’s a lost art or a vital skill, our kids will be signing their names with flair again soon. Now teach them how to drive stick shift and we’ll really be partying like it’s 1976.

One of our own, Franceschina “Franca” Grispino (the heart behind Altomonte’s Italian Market), was just awarded one of Italy’s highest civilian honors. Order of the Star of Italy, which is not to be confused with Order of the Star of Bucks (the award my mom gave me for this newsletter). It’s a huge congrats to a family that has kept our bellies full and our community connected for decades. Congratulazioni!

Anyway, we have better things to talk about than my grass. We’ve got rooftop reveals, seasonal scoops and a history lesson that proves our ancestors were for sure weirder than we are.

🤔 Did you know?

Washington wasn’t the only one crossing the Delaware. In November 1815, a 20 foot Northern Bottlenose whale took a very wrong turn and ended up in the shallow waters of the Delaware River near Morrisville.

Local residents captured Wally (a name given by clever historians) and decided the most logical and obvious next step was to haul poor Wally to the center of Doylestown on a giant wagon (what.the.heck.).

You could pay 25 cents to see the 'Monster of the Deep' - a nickname that definitely wouldn’t have hurt Wally’s feelings at all - at the Doylestown Hotel (which is now a Starbucks, because, progress). Next time you’re waiting for a latte, just remember: a decomposing, 20 foot whale once sat exactly where you're standing. The smell was, by all accounts, historically bad…(these bad jokes are part of the charm).

🍳 On the menu

Seafood lover or not, mosey on over to Jules at Market for their spring menu. Start with the oyster flight (a passionfruit and urfa chili combo). It’s insanely good. The move for dinner is Bronzino. The primavera fregola salad and sweet peas give it the spring vibe you want. And we’re dessert fans here so save a little room for the strawberry citrus olive oil cake. Walk it off on the Bristol Waterfront afterward if the weather is nice.

Are we even friends if we don’t talk about ice cream? Owowcow dropped the new seasonals and honestly, it’s a hazard to my waistline. I’m personally eyeing the ‘fancy tea party in a cone’ (tea & biscuits). But here’s the full lineup: Tea & Biscuits: Earl Grey lavender with lemon shortbread. Toast & Jam: Brown butter base with swirls of berry jam. Chocolate Honeycomb: Milk chocolate loaded with crunchy honeycomb bits.

❤️ Local heart

Sometimes, being a good neighbor means more than just waving across the driveway (or not mowing your lawn before 8am on Sundays). Back in December, eight of our neighbors were marked safe thanks to the incredible bravery of two local heroes.

Around 5am, Justin Ritorto was heading out for an early gym session when he spotted flames at a home right across from Penndel Borough Hall (more proof that working out is a good call) . Without a second thought, Justin sprinted toward the fire, banging on doors and windows to wake the family inside. He was quickly joined by Officer Sean Peck, who had spotted the blaze from the station across the street.

Together, they managed to get three generations of the Turner family (including the kids) out of the house just moments before it was fully engulfed. Our local congressmen recently recognized Justin for his heroism. We couldn’t be prouder to call him a neighbor.

📍Where I’m heading

We all know the Ferry Market is the go-to when nobody in the group can agree on what to eat. But it’s also officially evolved into one of our favorite weekend hangout hubs. You can grab a SkyRoast pour over, order a pizza or gyro and people watch (you do that too, right?) on the dog friendly patio. It’s now less of a quick bite spot and more of a “stay for two hours” destination.

Outdoor sip season is officially here (finally!). Which means you’re probably looking for the ultimate perch. So, look no further than the new Main Sip rooftop bar (private cabanas available, just fyi). It’s the first place in Doylestown where you can drink while being closer to the clouds. And there’s just something about a cold drink and a warm breeze that hits differently when you’re a few stories up.

By the way, the best “I’m too cheap to turn on the AC” replies from Friday:

• Jim: “Soak some hand towels then freeze them, wrap them around your neck.” (Sweet relief for about 5 minutes)

• Jill: “Tuck frozen peas in your pillowcase.” (Feels lumpy, I’m doing this wrong)

Anywho, this is our first Thu/Fri hybrid and we’re pretty hyped about it. Instead of a longer list of weekend happenings, we did the hard work of pulling together the best things to do. So you get to do the easy work of going out and having fun.

❤️ Local heart

Most news outlets talk about the big names, but it’s the quiet partnerships that truly keep our community’s heart beating. Recently, Fred Beans gave a very generous gift to Bucks for Kids.

But the real story is in where those dollars go. The money is funneled directly into what they call “Small Joy” grants. They pay for things that aren’t covered by traditional foster care funding: travel soccer fees, martial arts classes, summer camp tuition and even graduation gowns.

It’s a beautiful reminder of what happens when local businesses reinvest in our community. By funding these small joys, they aren’t just writing a check. They’re making sure foster youth in Bucks have the same opportunities to learn, play, and grow as any other kid in our neighborhood.

💡Local hack

Everyone else heads to Core Creek Park for the dog park or boat rentals. But you? You’re going to know the secret sunset spot. Well, you and all the other readers of From Bucks but never mind that.

If you want the best sunset view in the county without the crowds, bypass the main entrance and head to the East Tollgate Road entrance. Park at the lot off East Tollgate and look for the gravel path. Unless you want the 20 minute hike from the main lot.

Follow the path toward the northern cove area (the quiet side of the lake). There’s a specific clearing near the northern edge of the lake where the sun aligns perfectly with the water’s horizon during the spring months.

Side note, bring a pair of binoculars. This pocket of the park is a preferred nesting spot for Great Blue Herons this time of year. You’ll likely see them fishing in the golden hour light without the noise of the main park area.

😎 Out and about

Skip the playground and set the alarm. This Saturday around seven thirty (yes in the morning), Silver Lake Nature Center has a Morning Bird Walk that’s worth the early wake up call. We’re at the peak of spring migration, so the trails are buzzing with color and sound. It’s the ultimate no screens Saturday morning.

After your nap, if you’re looking for that “if you know, you know” weekend vibe (and who isn’t?) skip the crowds and head to Art in the Barn for their Sourdough Symposium. It’s this Saturday from 4-5:30. Whether you’re a total beginner or just chasing the elusive, perfect crust, local pros are pulling back the curtain on their sourdough secrets. It’s peak Saturday evening chic.

I have been telling anyone who will listen, Fame Good Eats may have the best food in a 50 mile radius. Go for their brunch and you’ll email me later to thank me. You could point to anything on the menu and be happy (but Lemon Berry Bliss pancakes or Short Rib Benny will have you saying “what a time to be alive”). Heads up, they’re sort of awkwardly tucked away like the secret treasure they are. So just follow the crowd and the heavenly scent of French toast flights.

If you’re bored of the usual wine & cheese pairings, Pickled & Poured is breaking the rules. A fun collab between Crossings Vineyard and Giovanni’s Delicious Pickles. This is a Sunday afternoon of “you paired what with what?” where you might just discover your new favorite flavor profile.

Not just a local gem, but a national standout. One of our favorite riverside boroughs just scored two wins in USA Today’s 10 Best Readers' Choice Awards. Ranking No. 5 in the Northeast and No. 7 in the nation, New Hope officially has the trophies to match its second to none arts and scenery. If you’ve never hung out by the river in spring or summer, you’re cheating yourself.

Peace Valley is getting its canopy back. This past Sunday, volunteers teamed up with Bucks Beautiful to plant dozens of native trees, repairing the damage from recent storms. It was a true community effort to keep the park lush and a crash course in botany. (Did you know trees have genders? So I guess consider your allergies a form of flirting?)

Protecting the community and the pantry? Okayyy, we see you. Huge shout out to the Warminster Police Benevolent Association, which donated nearly $2K to the local food bank this weekend. It’s a major boost that will go directly toward stocking the shelves for families in need.

A new skyline for the Industrial Commons? Big changes are on the table for the corner of Newtown-Yardley Road and Penn Street. A proposal aims to swap industrial sites for 308 modern apartments across two four-story buildings. And yes, I know your first thought, more people?? Traffic is already a nightmare. And it will continue to be. But the proposal includes parking garages, so at least you’ll have a nice place to sit while you wait 20 minutes to turn left onto Penn Street.

So here’s a new one for you: “Adopt a Drain”. Starting this week, the Bristol Borough Council is highlighting a new seasonal initiative for stormwater management (look, if I see a yellow raincoat or red balloon, I’m out). So they’re asking for volunteers to help keep neighborhood streets clear during spring showers. It’s a great way for residents to take ownership of their block.

Though good luck with that now that softball and baseball season are in full swing. One day last week I had three games I was supposed to be at. And (cue Meatloaf) I ended up saying, oh well 2 outta 3 ain’t bad.

Today is heavy on local heart, history and where to go. Curse me for not having a third H. Anyway, I don’t know about you but Sunday is quickly becoming my favorite day of the week. Let’s get to it.

❤️ Local Heart

A farm in Mechanicsville, Carversville Farm Foundation, has quietly become an absolute powerhouse for local good. They’ve been providing hundreds of thousands of pounds of high-quality produce and meat to organizations like the Bucks County Housing Group and A Woman’s Place.

In just one year of giving they surpassed 350,000lbs of organic vegetables and grass fed meat donated. Not to mention over six hundred thousand eggs. Just, wow.

Their mission is simple but profound: dignity. Giving food pantry guests the same top ingredients found in high-end restaurants. Carversville isn't just filling plates, they’re fueling the community with respect.

They’re literally the standard for philanthropic farming. We’re lucky to have them in our backyard. Thank you Tony and team!

Their seasonal Small Batch Scones come in bright flavors like Lemon Ginger and Blueberry. Or if you’re in the mood for something a bit richer, their Blueberry Lemon (or the Goat Cheese, Bacon & Almond 🤤) sweet breads are baked fresh daily.

🤔 Did You Know?

We all know the Liberty Bell lives in Philly, but did you know it spent a night hiding in Bucks County? In September 1777 the bell was smuggled out of the city under a pile of manure (ew, but alright) and potato sacks (feels more reasonable) on a farmer’s wagon.

It traveled right through Doylestown and New Hope, stopping overnight at a local tavern to avoid detection. Those who saw the wagon had no idea the nation’s most precious symbol was buried under a pile of cow poo right in front of them. Talk about a dirty little secret.

📍 Where I’m Heading

While they serve food, the real draw at the Bird’s Nest (New Hope) is the three indoor golf simulator bays. It’s becoming a spot for golfers looking to stay sharp even when it’s raining (or a little chilly). And they’re family friendly, so bring the kids. They’ll love the fries.

And if you’re ready to ditch single-use plastics, head to Yardley Refillery (Yardley) where you can refill everything from laundry detergent to high-end skincare. Though their most popular item? Local coffee that’s delicious. 92,000 plastic bottles (and counting) saved since they opened in 2023.
