Oh no, morning fall ball was canceled today. Oh no. (wink) Aw, shucks. (grabbing coffee and slippers). Terrible news.
Anywho, a rainy day is a great day to do…absolutely nothing. Except read this.
The theater that’s older than your great-great-great-grandparents
Newtown Theatre has been holding down State Street since 1831. Meaning it was already middle aged by the time the cinema was actually invented. And it’s also our county’s oldest theater.
Before it ever projected a single film, the hall hosted local church services and major anti-slavery rallies featuring Frederick Douglass and Lucretia Mott.
Its big motion picture debut in 1906? Silent footage of the devastating San Francisco earthquake. (Clearly, opening night thrillers aren’t a new concept.)
These days, the marquee leans heavily into comedy shows and live concerts. Pivoting from 19th-century abolitionist assembly hall to comedy club is a pretty elite career shift for a building rapidly closing in on its 200th birthday.
Fall flavors x2
In keeping with the Newtown vibe…Piccolo Trattoria is living out its ‘full autumn takeover’ plan.
They have both an autumn risotto and a pumpkin gnocchi. Which means low carb is out the window and I’ll be ordering two dinners.
Which is some top tier sweater weather commitment. It’s also a power move if you’re planning date night.
The kind of neighbor story we need more of
When a local grandmother in Bristol unexpectedly became the sole caregiver for her granddaughter, stretching a budget suddenly meant making some tough choices.
When pandemic-era food benefits came to an end, she started making regular trips on her bicycle to the local HELP Center just to keep essentials in the kitchen. It didn’t take long for the community to notice. On rainy days, neighbors began pulling over to offer rides. Soon after, local folks pitched in together to buy her a new bike so her commutes were safer and easier.
In a world full of noise, sometimes the best story is just a neighbor, a bicycle, and a town that refuses to let anyone ride uphill alone.
I hope you have a relaxing day and your kids do all their chores and you don’t have to hear a single complaint and dinner magically appears on the table. Amen.
See you Tuesday for a round of good news!
May you get a midday nap,
Cait
